Hyakka Ryouran’s personalized version of Hatsune Miku has always been a riot to watch and it’s hard not to take a little delight in hearing Toyosaki Aki sink her teeth into such a snooty and audacious role. There could hardly be a person less suited to be an honorable samurai than Kanetsugu – she is clumsy, petty and extremely loud, just to put it mildly. Laughing at her misfortune is the root of many humors in this show and the self- proclaimed warrior of love is chiefly the subject of derision for the other female leads. Such a character does not always work in anime, but what makes Hyakka Ryouran ticks is its shameless humor (and mouthwatering fanservice), and Kanetsugu fits neatly into the box as the lead character that draws out the comedic moments of the show. The Shinkage Meido Caf. The comical effect was fantastic and similar to the pantsu- thief gag last week, this one played up the eccentricities of all the characters –the S& M relationship between Sen Hime and Hanzou, Sasuke’s moeblob allure and what I would describe as a very peculiar bond between Juubei and Musashi. It wouldn’t be Hyakka Ryouran without the usual nastiness and verbal abuse, but this show can also be guilefully sentimental at times and such warmth to the material is what we saw in Kanetsugu’s journey to “Master Samurai- hood”. For starters, it looks like we have a great friendship brewing in the backdrop as both Sasuke and Kanetsugu stood up for each other when they confronted a seemingly berserk Mataemon. ![]() In fact, I was ecstatic to see things not working against Kanetsugu this week – it’s not like the poor girl doesn’t try hard enough. It felt like a well- deserved reward to finally see Muneakira and Kanetsugu kiss, and the over- the- top action sequences that ensued were truly a remarkable sight to behold – especially Kanetsugu’s Naoe- Style Warhammer Technique! With Muneakira locking lips left and right so frequently, I wouldn’t be completely taken aback if Matabe or Hanzou forms a kissing- pact with him sooner or later. They certainly seem to be interested in the idea, or maybe it’s just the frustration seeping through as they realized Kanetsugu has somehow leapfrog ahead of them. No question, I continue to be very impressed with this show and for my money, it’s probably the best comedy of the spring season. The Samurai Girl’s former foe, Yagyuu Gisen (Mizuhara Kaoru) will likely pay the Shinkage dojo a visit next week and judging from the sheer hilarity that she brought during season one, that can only be good news! Disney agreed to this without ever seeing Mononoke. All week, The Ringer will be celebrating Good Bad Movies, those films that are so terrible they’re endlessly amusing and — dare we say it? Please join us as we give the over- the- top action movies, low- budget romance thrillers, and peak ’8. Here’s a thing I’m not afraid to admit: I’ve seen Road House more times than I’ve seen The Godfather. I’ve seen Citizen Kane twice in my life — but once watched She’s All That twice in a weekend. You, too, are guilty of something like this. There’s just something enjoyable about a movie that’s hopelessly committed to its (very bad) vision. Whether it’s due to bad special effects, awful acting, or a completely absurd or nonsensical plot, these films create a sense of sheer wonderment and force you to exclaim, “How is this a movie?!” But the mere fact that something so illogical, or low- budget, or ill- conceived exists is at the root of why we like these movies. They’re so bad that . We’ll be exploring the genre at length, but no project would be complete without a big list that definitively determines the greatest Good Bad Movies to ever be released. It was a Herculean task (and in this case we’re specifically using that adjective with the Rock’s Hercules in mind); here’s how we did it. The Qualifications. ![]() The Good Bad Movie genre is not easy to define. The line between so- bad- it’s- good and so- bad- I- left- the- theater is quite thin; taste is subjective, and what one person finds to be amusingly bad others may consider plain bad. The emergence of parody movies, meanwhile, raises questions about how integral artistic intent is in giving a film the Good Bad label. Therefore, following these three rules is a solid, efficient way to determine whether a movie is Good Bad: Enjoyment of the movie must be derived from its badness. Its badness needs to be the thing that creates a sense of bewildered enjoyment. There must be a pervading sense that those who made the film thought what they were doing was great, or at least good. Good Bad Movies have minimal self- awareness. Here are two examples that may help explain this sentiment: (1) Mac. Gruber is not a Good Bad Movie, it’s a tribute to Good Bad Movies, and (2) Fast Five is not a Good Bad Movie, it is a movie that intentionally wades into ridiculousness (and then manufactures a reaction similar to the one a Good Bad Movie elicits naturally). The movie must have been something of a critical failure when it was released. Movies Where The Actors Really Did It Twisted Sex in Science Fiction Actors Who Have Done Full Frontal The Best R-Rated Sex Comedies Mainstream Films That Are Almost. Critics, god bless them, hold movies to a high standard as an art form and generally don’t reward a movie for being of low quality. In that way, they’re a helpful, as- objective- as- possible resource in determining which films are bad, and therefore eligible to be Good Bad. After solidifying what qualifies a Good Bad Movie, we moved toward constructing a definitive top- 5.
This is a really cool movie, as it brought a lot of nostalgia of my golden days of videogame enjoyment. I have to say that the Wreck it Ralph game is interesting. Gerard Butler seems to specialize in making movies that could kill him, but he never imagined a wave would bring him the closest he'd get to death. The Process. It started in- house, with staff members of The Ringer nominating candidates. After weeding out the nominees that did not adhere to Rule No. Rotten Tomatoes was deemed ineligible — the remaining movies were put through this formula: I know. Stay with me. CR stands for Cultural Relevance, and was determined by multiplying a movie’s number of Google News hits in the last year (with 1 point being awarded per 1. A Good Bad Movie’s ability to stay in the cultural conversation years after it came out is important, and indicates how a respective movie is gaining appreciation and growing a fan base. RT — this one’s easy — stands for Rotten Tomatoes score. Because Good Bad Movies must overcome an astonishingly low level of quality, our system favors the films with truly abysmal critical receptions, rather than the ones that were reviewed as mediocre to bad. PO stands for Public Opinion. Overall enjoyment is the absolute end goal of a Good Bad Movie, and how much a Good Bad Movie is liked is core to its rating against other Good Bad Movies. To determine PO, a couple of weeks ago we tweeted out a list of every candidate and asked readers to pick their 1. After the poll closed and total votes were tabulated, each movie was ranked from 1 to 6. Do the 6,7. 00 or so people who voted in this poll appropriately represent the opinion of the viewing public? Probably not. But until the government adds Good Bad Movie questions to census forms, this is the best we’ve got. GBS stands for Good Bad Score. The higher a movie’s GBS is, the more esteemed it is as a Good Bad Movie. All right! Now that math class is over, it’s time to learn the 5. Good Bad Movies ever. It’s unbelievably stupid and bizarrely tone deaf: This guy’s hand kills his parents and best friends, and it all plays out like a comedy. But Idle Hands is Good Bad because of how sharply of a time it feels — it’s 1. VHS tape. The entire movie is scored by the Offspring — which the trailer goes out of its way to mention; ’9. Devon Sawa is the lead; Seth Green, that era’s go- to witty sidekick, is the witty sidekick; and a pre- Honest Jessica Alba is the literal girl next door who is ? I don’t know how and/or why — but I do know that Idle Hands is a gem of a bad movie. Second, you make the movie a thing where the main part of the plot is that he has to fight in a tournament or in an off- the- books fight circle to avenge something or someone. Third, you make sure to have an impossible- to- defeat bad guy waiting for JCVD at the end. Fourth, don’t forget to sprinkle in, say, something like 1. JCVD interacts with a woman in some charming way. Fifth, also be sure to have a point in there when he gets hurt pretty badly but not so badly that it totally stops him from fighting. Sixth, have at least one funny scene. And then seventh, let it end with JCVD all busted up but still triumphant. It works just about every single time. I don’t know what TF happened there.)4. But then again, it’s just over 9. How did you get involved?” “I just answered my phone” is an actual exchange) to hold your attention until the credits roll. You won’t think too hard, maybe one or two details will actually stay with you — like Statham and Chris Evans beefing over whose crewneck tee is most medium, or how the movie feels like it was made specifically for MTV2 daytime programming — and both William H. Macy and Jessica Biel are in it. As long as you accept that as the only unifying premise of the objectively bad 1. Dante’s Peak, you’ll be able enjoy it. The film takes place in a peaceful town that gets blown to pieces after a once- inactive volcano suddenly erupts. Brosnan plays a noted vulcanologist who spends the first half of the movie squinting at rocks and warning people that danger is coming. He’s scarred by the loss of his girlfriend, who “loved volcanoes” but was also killed by one. And even though he convinces town mayor/single mom Linda Hamilton to fall in love with him in the span of a day, he asserts that he’s “always been better at figuring out volcanoes than people and politics.” $1. CGI later, he emerges from the mountain hellscape with a broken arm and a new family. Being is a vulcanologist is a trip, man. The limit does not exist. What Obsessed lacks in believable dialogue, premise, and overall quality, it makes up for with Beyonc. Sorry, Unforgettable. And is there a scene where a guy gets his hand mutilated because someone else shoves it into a spinning motorcycle wheel? And does Brian Bosworth’s character have a komodo dragon that he feeds smoothies made of Snickers and potato chips? And is there a part where a guy dresses like a member of the clergy so he can sneak a bunch of weapons into a courtroom?” Because if the answers to those questions are all yes, then you know it’s a Good Bad Movie. I can say with confidence, then, that the 2. Nic Cage remake of The Wicker Man is a Great Bad Movie, because the drinking game my friends and I played once while watching it made us so belligerent that I was nearly evicted from my home. Rules included “drink every time Nic Cage raises his voice,” “drink every time Nic Cage makes an unreasonable demand,” and, the one that my liver will never recover from, “drink every time Nic Cage strikes anything with intent to damage (this includes people also).”The most ridiculous moments of The Wicker Man have, rightfully, become memes: Cage’s overdramatic read of the line “How’d it get burned?”; his death wail “NOT THE BEES!”; and, of course, the scene where he punches a woman in the face while wearing a bear suit, which is only slightly more ridiculous when put into slow motion and set to the Chariots of Fire song. From top to bottom, this movie is basically just an hour and 4. Nicolas Cage striking the viewer with intent to damage, which means you have to drink for the entire thing. Elmo’s Fire, and a hockey puck into a cauldron. It’s deliciously ’8. Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and a brand- new Keanu Reeves. Out of every entry in Swayze’s ’8. Youngblood probably gets the least reverence, but it’s absolutely deserving of a cult movement. I mean, c’mon, just look at this: (MGM Entertainment)4. Hercules has plenty of great, horrible, very good- bad moments — cheese god Brett Ratner’s gory direction, John Hurt’s heel turn, the fact that the Rock’s Hercules has luscious shoulder- length hair and a club that makes him look like Bam- Bam — but we need to start with the lion hat. This lion hat: (MGM)The hat was once the head of the Nemean Lion, which Hercules slayed as one of his famous 1. Naturally, Ratner’s film yada- yadas those endeavors to make a movie about Herc training an army of farmers. But that’s part of the film’s appeal. Hercules assumes that no one would ever see a Hercules movie that’s . Got it — that Zeus.) In its place, we get a sturdy swords- and- sandals epic, a very confused Dwayne Johnson performance, and — yes — the lion hat. Long may it roar. A time when dance movies reigned supreme, when B2. K ruled the airwaves and teen girls’ hearts. A time that brought us the true gem that is You Got Served, a delightfully terrible dance- competition movie that stars Omarion (and the rest of B2. Oscar- Winning Actors That Then Made Bad Movies. The Oscars honor the most talented people within the filmmaking industry. Even though it’s a mostly subjective award ceremony, there’s usually no denying the talent from most nominees. Still, the Oscars don’t have the ability to steer its winners away from poor career choices, and sometimes, some actors end up starring in the worst films of their careers just after taking home an Academy Award. Some actors — talented though they may be — have taken all the wrong kind of chances after winning an Oscar. Instead of creatively capitalizing on their exposure, they took on roles that belonged to films that shouldn’t have even existed in the first place. So, instead of brushing these “gems” under the rug and forgetting about them forever, take a look at the 1. Worst Films That Actors Have Starred In After Winning An Oscar. Halle Berry – Catwoman. When Halle Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, it was a big deal. Not only was Monster’s Ball a raw and complicated role, but by winning the award, Berry made history. She was the first black woman to ever win an Oscar in that category (and is still the only black woman to ever win). Sadly, the career that followed did not exactly do her talents any justice. Clearly wanting to have a bit of fun, she took the lead in 2. Catwoman, which ultimately turned out to be one of the worst career choices any actress in the history of motion pictures has ever made. Not only is Catwoman unwatchable, it’s both offensive to the source material, as well as to Berry herself. The fact that this film was ever made is completely indefensible. Reese Witherspoon – Penelope. Walk the Line was a Johnny Cash biopic, but it was Reese Witherspoon as Johnny’s wife June who truly stole the show. In fact, her performance was so revered that she went on to win an Oscar for it. Since then, she’s done some fine work, but the direction she took her career in directly after winning the Oscar was a strange one. She could have taken any role she wanted, but instead, she chose Penelope, the “Christina Ricci has a pig nose” movie that no one ever saw. Charming though it might have been to see Witherspoon take on a humorous secondary role in a romantic comedy, she could have chosen better. It doesn’t matter if the film had heart or if the performances weren’t terrible — Penelope isn’t just a bad movie, it’s the antithesis of the sort of movie an actor should ever even consider starring in following an Oscar win. This was just a bad idea. Jennifer Lawrence – Serena. When Jennifer Lawrence showed up in Hollywood, she channeled David Bowie and pulled a solid “Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am,” not only earning herself an Oscar nomination when she was twenty- years- old, but winning only two years later. Between her critical status, as well as her worldwide star power from the Hunger Games series, Lawrence has quickly become untouchable Hollywood royalty. Still, that doesn’t make her impervious to making poor choices. While her career was still in the midst of being a firework display that no one could take their eyes off of, she starred opposite Bradley Cooper for the third time since her Oscar- winning performance in Silver Lining’s Playbook and her Oscar- nominated performance in American Hustle — in a film adaptation called Serena. On the surface, it seemed like more Oscar bait, but in reality, it turned out to be a boring, sloppily- made waste of a film. It’s easily Lawrence’s worst cinematic outing to date. Roberto Benigni – Pinocchio. Roberto Benigni is a national treasure in Italy, and for good reason. Between films like The Monster and Life is Beautiful (which he took home an Oscar for in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category), he’s proven how talented he is several times over. Directing yourself isn’t as easy as it sounds, but Benigni has proven his abilities in spades. Sadly, the magic didn’t last after he won an Oscar, even though magic was precisely what he was trying to channel with his follow- up film, Pinocchio. It certainly had the potential to be as much of a masterpiece as Life is Beautiful was, but he sadly missed the mark. By a lot. Benigni knows how to be lovable, and he knows how to make a movie. But if Pinocchio was the only Roberto Benigni movie you had ever seen, then you’d be right to think otherwise. Helen Mirren – National Treasure: Book Of Secrets. Actors taking on big- budget movies after winning an Oscar seems to be a popular trend. It’s not always a particularly positive trend, but it’s a trend all the same. Clearly, after months of campaigning, they just want to have a little fun (and perhaps make a pretty penny in the process). Helen Mirren did this with National Treasure: Book of Secrets, but it would have have been great if she hadn’t. The first film was fun, at best, but also just as unnecessary as its sequel. A better franchise exists for these films in some alternate universe, but that doesn’t mean it deserves the company of the Queen herself. While taking on roles in big- budget movies helps actors afford to be more creative with their acting choices, Mirren deserved better. Nicolas Cage – Con Air. Is Nicolas Cage one of the worst or best actors alive? You watch him in something like Adaptation or Raising Arizona, and you see brilliance, but then you watch him in something like Moonstruck or The Wicker Man, and you very much don’t. Nicolas Cage is an enigma like no other, which probably has a lot to do with why so many people are so fascinated by him. Still, he proved his acting abilities by winning the Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas — a high that didn’t end up lasting very long. He followed that win with a string of action blockbusters, and one of those explosion- fests was Con Air. You may have fond of memories of this film as being one of his more “normal” career choices, but don’t let your memory fool you. Con Air is far from normal. The hair and accent combo alone will throw you for a serious loop. Natalie Portman – Your Highness. There have been some solid stoner comedies over the years. Between films like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and Pineapple Express, the stoner sub- genre isn’t half- bad, and it’s often a great place to look for some simple laughs. Every film genre has its dumpster fires, and stoner comedies are definitely no exception. When James Franco and Danny Mc. Bride were at the forefront of herb- induced cinema in the late 2. Medieval comedy, Your Highness, and for some reason, Natalie Portman thought it would be a good idea to tag along. After just won an Academy Award for Black Swan, Portman didn’t need to prove herself to anyone. She was already a huge success. We applaud her attempt to step outside her comfort zone, but it’s hard to see how anyone could think signing on for a film like Your Highness would be a good idea. You’re smarter than that, Nat! Adrien Brody – The Village. Adrien Brody has disappeared, or at least, it definitely feels that way sometimes. Seriously, where’d this guy go? Even though he’s still working today, Brody doesn’t seem to have the kind of presence in Hollywood that his talent deserves. He’s turned in solid roles in films like King Kong and The Darjeeling Limited, but he doesn’t leave as solid an impression as he ought to. And maybe he can thank The Village for that. Borderline abhorred for its disappointing ending, The Village signaled a turning point for writer/director M. Night Shyamalan. In a way, his entire career can be split in two, as the pre- Village rise to stardom and the post- Village circling of the drain. Brody does his best in the role (even though the casual moviegoer might define this as “over- acting”), but it’s just not very good. Kate Winslet – Movie 4. Kate Winslet can do no wrong. While it’d be nice to think so, Winslet, like any other actor, has flaws. She makes mistakes. After starring in the one- two punch that was Revolutionary Road and The Reader (the latter of which won her an Academy Award), she didn’t take the wisest route for her career. Instead, she showed up in a supporting role in the legendarily awful anthology comedy, Movie 4. The problem, however, is the fact that Jackman’s character literally has testicles hanging from his neck. The rest of the sketches in the film aren’t any better, and the entire cast (not only Winslet) owe their fans an explanation for signing on to appear in a film that ranks among the worst ever made. And really — actual testicles. Shirley Mac. Laine – Cannonball Run IIShirley Mac. Laine is a legend, and when she’s screaming through the hospital in Terms of Endearment so that someone will please give her dying daughter some pain meds, it’s plain to see why. That said, it doesn’t matter how talented you are — no one gets away with starring in the sequel to Cannonball Run. Not even Shirley Mac. Laine. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what happened, and even though it didn’t necessarily ruin her career by any means, it hardly helped. Cannonball Run II is a weak excuse for a comedy, and it doesn’t matter what sort of talent might have been involved. There are comedy franchises that stand the test of time (National Lampoon’s Vacation comes to mind), but Cannonball Run is not one of them. Michael Douglas – Black Rain. Michael Douglas’ career is certainly an interesting one. He has various spikes, and then sudden lows, but he’s still considered one of the best all the same. His most iconic work just so happened to be the role he won an Oscar for (Wall Street), and from there on, he could have done just about anything with his career. Why he chose Black Rain, however, is anyone’s guess. After suiting up in corporate getups during his time on Wall Street, he clearly wanted to break free; it’s just a shame that he chose to cut loose in such a mediocre film. It’s from Ridley Scott, and it’s the kind of film that a critic might associate with “high- octane action!” but it just doesn’t work. What goes on behind the scenes of Project Runway? Club. In entertainment, an awful lot of stuff happens behind closed doors, from canceling TV shows to organizing music festival lineups. While the public sees the end product on TVs, movie screens, or radio dials, they don’t see what it took to get there. In Expert Witness, The A. V. Club talks to industry insiders about the actual business of entertainment in hopes of shedding some light on how the pop- culture sausage gets made. Now in its 1. 2th season, Project Runway has become the premier fashion competition show, handily besting pretenders like NBC’s Fashion Star. Part of that is due, of course, to host Heidi Klum and contestant mentor Tim Gunn, but the show’s success also comes largely from its level of talent: Designers on Project Runway appear to have what it takes to actually make it in fashion. But what keeps that level of competition so high? And why hasn’t Project Runway fallen into the trap—save this season’s Sandro Masmanidi—of casting loose cannons to drive ratings and drama? Moreover, is what viewers see on the show what really happens in the workroom? Club talked to one of the show’s producers, Sara Rea, about the timeline, accessory wall, and “make it work” moments. Then they go receive their challenge; they meet Tim or Heidi or whoever, depending on who is setting it up—we’re very transparent. There isn’t a whole lot of behind- the- scenes that isn’t onscreen. Anyway, we shoot while we travel now, so that’s all documented. ![]() They get their challenge, they sketch, they go to Mood—we’re shooting them while they go to Mood—they come back to the workroom and they’re literally in that workroom until 1. During that time we do have mandatory lunch breaks. We’ve learned that we have to make them eat because they’ll get so focused that they won’t eat, and that’s not good for them or us or anyone. We just do rotations so that everyone eats at different times within the same hour block. That’s usually quick because they’re exhausted. The show is so focused on process. Unlike a show where you’re cooking or doing photography or modeling, the designers literally have to be in that workroom working on those clothes. It is a process. So we’re shooting a lot, and maybe you can hear a pin drop a lot of times, but it’s a part of what they have to do before there’s a runway the next day. We have a small break that is just logistical for us to get all of our cameras moved down and set up. They don’t get to work on the clothes during that time, and they’re separated from their models. The designers eat then, but it only takes about a half an hour for us get set up, and then we shoot the runway show a couple of times without the judges just to make sure the audience gets enough views of the garments. I know this sounds boring, but it’s all pretty much what you see on TV up to the runway day. There are no real tricks in our world because of our time constraints; we shoot an episode every two to three days and we don’t take a day off in between. They finish a runway, someone’s eliminated at 8 p. And that happens for five to six weeks straight. Within that we may have three interview days where they get a chance to breathe and do interviews. But it is grueling. It’s pretty much what you see, because we really do shoot 1. AVC: So when Tim says, “Okay, you have till 1. SR: We have a mandatory turnaround. It’s not mandatory from anyone but us, but we’ve decided that we have to have a minimum six hours for the designers to sleep. And that’s minimum. But, yeah, they’re up at 5 a. They’re working to midnight, and by the time they get back it’s 1. So we have to shut it down. We also can’t have camera crews all night. There are probably four hours total where no one is at Parsons on a given day. We have to wrap out and clean everything up from a production standpoint, and then people have to get in and prep before the following morning. AVC: Do you have camera shifts? SR: We have multiple, multiple crews. We have morning shifts and day shifts and nighttime shifts. Every crew has 1. AVC: Why can’t the designers take work home at night? Is it because you can’t be there to film it or because they would run themselves into the ground? SR: Well, it’s both. It’s really more about the sleep, to be honest, because we’ve had seasons where they didn’t get as much sleep and we’ve had ambulances. In season eight they were exhausted mentally and physically, and it’s so intense emotionally and creatively that it wears them out. By episode eight, we always have someone breaking down because they’re burned out. So we have to manage them to make sure they go to sleep, because some of them would work all night. They’re just thinking about the immediate, but it’s a marathon. So we have to help manage that. AVC: You mentioned going to Mood in the morning. Is the show there before Mood even opens? SR: No, Mood closes for us. We have a very close, long- term working relationship with them and we make sure we’re posted on their schedule so they don’t close too early. We tell them, “Hey, we’ll be there in 3. It’s very, very kind, and it works out well for us for obvious reasons. AVC: And how does it work at Mood? You have to be cashed out within that half an hour? Have there been problems with designers not having their material cut in time? SR: We’ve had times where—and this rarely happens because Mood staffs very well for us—someone cuts their own fabric because they’re all frantic. But it’s only been an issue once in the seven seasons I’ve done. AVC: There’s been an issue on the show in the past with people bringing pattern books. What’s the rule about what they can bring, preparation- wise? Does Parsons have a library they can use? SR: It’s all in their heads. We don’t want them relying on other people’s designs or other materials, and we don’t want anyone to have an unfair advantage so we limit their resources to what the necessities are with their dress forms and their scissors and their sewing kits. We want them to create from what they know, not from a pattern book. It doesn’t help them and it could also be derivative, . You have your sewing kit and your creative minds: Go to work. AVC: How do you come up with challenges? And how do you know how much time or money to assign to a challenge? On Survivor, for instance, they have the staff test the challenges out. SR: On shows that have stunts and things like that, it’s very important to test them out. Here, we just use our working knowledge of, “Is this doable?” Tim is a great partner as far as, “Can they do this in this timeframe? Is this budget fair? What material should we give them?” We rely on him a lot. We usually have a good idea of what is and isn’t doable, but sometimes we’re very nervous. I remember season six—which is the first season I did—we did a newspaper challenge. The only material they had was the L. A. I was a nervous wreck, but I sat there and watched it, and they blew our minds—and that’s the beauty of it. The greatest challenges are when we put them in what seems like unbelievable situations and then they blow us away. That’s the fun of having them make clothes out of something you’d find in a grocery store or a party store. They can do it. We’re very mindful of what we put them up against, but we like to push them in order to get results that blow us and the audience away. AVC: When you’re doing an unconventional challenge, how do you choose the materials? SR: It’s a process. We have a team of people whose main job is to sit around and come up with ideas, and they bring them to us and we try to visualize all the different materials. I always like it when they present it to us as a list of what’s in that store. Like, what’s in a hardware store? It helps you say, “Well, what would I do? What could they use to make something?” And then we go with what we think would be the most fun and we try to make it different from a previous season. We just try to do what feels right and what we feel will have the best result. We never want to give them less than eight hours because that’s not fair, unless we own it and that’s been a part of the challenge. One time we did a five- hour challenge, and that was really hard. But we rarely do anything under eight hours, because it just doesn’t give them the time to do anything impressive. And if they don’t do anything impressive, then the show doesn’t work. AVC: What happens after the designers leave the workroom? They get separated from their models, but do they see them again before they hit the runway? SR: Backstage, they get five minutes of what we call “last looks” which we shoot and air when it’s relevant. They’re last- minute touch- ups, just like any designer would do for their show. AVC: And how do you set up the order of who walks when in the show? SR: We try to make it an interesting runway show for the judges. We don’t want to too many things that look alike one after another. We try to mix up the look so we don’t have three pair of pants walking and then three dresses. We’ll mix those up, so it’ll be a visually interesting show, just like a designer would if they were doing their own show. AVC: This season, you guys had Sandro Masmanidi, who was a bit of a loose cannon and ended up having to leave the show. SR: He had a lot of personality. AVC: It’s a credit to you guys that you’ve seemingly always cast for talent and not for crazy reality characters. SR: We’ve had loose cannons before, but he was particularly loose, or particularly a cannon. AVC: How do you cast the show? SR: We have a process of what we look for. Talent is first and foremost. We have closed casting calls, so we have to invite you. Project Runway Full Episodes, Video & More. Watch Project Runway Season 8 Online. S 8. E 1. And Sew It Begins. Aired. on Jul 2. 9, 2.
